Business Spotlight: CARR

Safe. Reliable. Affordable.

This week’s San Saba County Chamber of Commerce Business Spotlight features Central Texas Rural Transit District, better known as City and Rural Rides (CARR)—an organization providing accessible, affordable public transportation throughout rural Central Texas.

For residents of San Saba County and the surrounding area, reliable transportation can make all the difference. Whether it’s a trip to the grocery store, a medical appointment, errands, or another important destination, City and Rural Rides helps keep people moving while providing a service that supports independence and quality of life.

Transportation for Everyone

One thing CARR wants the community to know is simple: their transportation services are open to everyone.

City and Rural Rides provides public transportation Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., with an incredibly affordable fare of just $1 for every 5 miles traveled.

Even more impressive? That fare has never changed. As fuel and transportation costs have risen over the years, CARR has remained committed to keeping its service affordable for the communities it serves.

Nearly 50 Years of Serving Central Texas

City and Rural Rides has a long history of helping Central Texans get where they need to go.

The program began as a transportation service under Central Texas Opportunities, with individuals using their personal vehicles to provide rides for those in need. In 1998, CARR separated from CTO and became the Central Texas Rural Transit District, doing business as City and Rural Rides.

What began as a service covering eight counties has since grown to serve 15 counties across Central Texas.

And a major milestone is right around the corner: City and Rural Rides will celebrate 50 years of public transportation service in 2027!

Helping Rural Communities Stay Independent

What makes City and Rural Rides especially valuable is its commitment to providing transportation in rural communities where options can often be limited.

For CARR, transportation is about much more than getting from Point A to Point B. It can mean helping someone maintain their independence, make it to an important medical appointment, purchase groceries, take care of everyday necessities, or simply stay connected to their community.

That impact is something the CARR team is especially proud of.

“I love that we provide a service that helps individuals remain independent by providing an affordable means of transportation to grocery stores, medical appointments and many other destinations.”

Serving San Saba County with a Smile

When asked what they love most about doing business in San Saba County, the answer was easy: the friendly people!

That friendliness goes both ways. From Customer Service Representatives and Dispatchers to Drivers and Administrative staff, passengers can expect a welcoming experience from the CARR team.

Their commitment can be summed up in three words:

Safe. Reliable. Affordable.

As City and Rural Rides approaches its 50th anniversary, we are proud to highlight an organization that continues to provide such an important service to San Saba County and rural communities throughout Central Texas.

🚐 Need a ride? Remember, City and Rural Rides is open to everyone!
